If you have a personal relationship with someone it is possible to transition it to a friendship. It may be that the other person will break it off if a friendship is not what they were looking for, especially if you have already been intimate. But if you can maintain communication for a while then the bond of trust and friendship develops to the point where neither one of you would be willing to break it off. Of course, if one of you goes into a serious relationship then your friendship may even dissolve and simmer to make room for the relationship.
Casual dating may not even lead to deeper relationships. Especially if that is something you do not want. There are many people who love and dating are not looking for a serious relationship. Make your intentions known upfront so there are no misunderstandings.
